Project Spellstruck: How to Cast

Early concept art for the magical tool, a cross between a wand and a dagger.

In the world of Project Spellstruck, creating magic requires two steps: the channel and the cast.

Channel

During the channel, the arcane reaches deep into their memories to find a time they felt the specific emotion they’re trying to convey. If they’re trying to cast a fire spell, they focus on a time when they were so angry, they just wanted to see something burn. This memory is known as an anchor

Every arcane’s anchors are unique, because they’re drawn from their personal experiences. One challenge young arcanes face is that they have limited life experience to draw from. This is one reason why Elderwood University exists: to allow young arcanes to have strong emotional experiences with reduced danger of burnup within the school wards.

Cast

Once an arcane has channeled, they must cast or they’ll hit burnup. This is the act of turning that strong feeling into a specific concrete change in reality. Doing this requires focus and specificity. This is where their magical tool comes in; when pointed at the target, it provides a clear path to the desired object of change, helping the arcane tune out everything else.
